Washoe County and City of Reno Celebrates Global Cat Day Oct. 16
Reno, NV - Community Cats submitted a proclamation request for Global Cat Day to both Washoe County and the City of Reno. Specifically, October 16th is a day to celebrate and educate our community about Trap, Neuter and Return - TNR.
The event takes place at 11:30 am at the Washoe County Regional Animal Services meeting room, located at 2825 Longley Lane.
Community Cats has a big goal in 2023: to build an alliance of agencies and organizations involved with free-roaming cat populations to address the challenges Washoe County is facing.
“I see this proclamation as a first step in recognizing what we can all do to increase resources and improve the outlook for cats,” said Tracy Dean, Director, Community Cats. Community Cats is a volunteer non-profit organization.
TNR stops the cycle of breeding and is recognized throughout the United States and other countries as humane, cost-effective and efficient.
Community Cats, formed in 1999, has partnered with SPCA of Northern Nevada, Washoe County Regional Animal Services, Options Veterinary Care and Nevada Humane Society. A variety of groups in Northern Nevada have also been helped by Community Cats.
The City of Reno has awarded two grants to Community Cats for it’s TNR efforts since 2022. "Our Board of County Commissioners and City of Reno Council members have been extremely supportive and we hope to work together in the future," said Dean.
WCRAS Advisory Board will also discuss the proclamation on October 20 at 1:30 pm.
Poppy
April, 2022
Poppy was a unsocialized kitten that Josh, my neighbor, adopted from me 14 years ago. She was caught at a local cat colony and taken to the clinic to be fixed and vaccinated. After bringing her home, we believed we could give her a chance at a better life. Though I am very sad for Josh, this kind of story helps us keep going when it seems hopeless. TNR made a real difference to Poppy and ultimately to Josh.
Dear Tracy
I just wanted to let you know that yesterday Poppy was put down after her health deteriorated rapidly over the past few weeks. I just wanted to thank you for persuading me to take a chance on her over 14 years ago.
I had no idea then that this shy and skittish kitten would turn into such an amazing companion. She remained reserved and quirky as an adult cat, but was also incredibly smart, intuitive, affectionate and sweet. Even in her final days, her favorite hobbies included long morning sun naps while curling between the blinds in the bedroom and making my pillow/sleeping space her own whenever the opportunity presented (the photo attached is just a few months old).
I love Poppy dearly and am completely devastated by her loss, but I'm confident she knew she was loved and she enriched my life beyond belief. So thank you again for bringing Poppy into my life. I know I'll never forget her.

Community Cats Kicks Off 2.0 Reboot
Partners with TNR Clinic to Help Rural Nevada
7 March 2022
Dayton, NV -
Riverside Veterinary Hospital, partnering with Community Cats, hosted a spay/neuter clinic on Saturday, March 5. Four local rural TNR (Trap, Neuter and Return) organizations participated and 43 free-roaming cats received veterinary services including exam, spay/neuter, vaccinates and eartip, to identify them as going through the program.
The groups bringing cats into the clinic included CASI (Carson Animal Services Initiative), Carson Tahoe SPCA, ARGONN (Animal Rescue Group of Northern Nevdada) and FAWG (Fallon Animal Welfare Group). Dr’s Collins and Kowalec of Riverside Veterinary Hospital in Dayton had the idea for the event and managed the clinic process, donations of clinic supplies along with coordinating staff and volunteers.
“We all know that more can be accomplished when we can pool resources,” said Tracy Dean of Community Cats. “Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who made this event possible and Community Cats is excited to partner with Riverside. We hope this type of event will happen again soon,” said Dean.
TNR is the humane and efficient solution to managing free-roaming cat populations and this type of program is used around the world.
Community Cats is a 501(c)(3) non-profit formed in 2003 that advocates for animal welfare and partners with organizations to provide access to quality spay/neuter services in our local area.
Community Cats promotes the Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) Program started in 2000 in Washoe County. Community Cats is dedicated to partnering throughout Northern Nevada to
offer TNR services and promoting the benefits of TNR – the only cost-effective, efficient and humane way to manage free-roaming cat populations.
